Now that you know the reasoning behind Landscape Design here are the next steps.
GOALS: decide what you want to accomplish. A new entry, patio, special garden area, walkway or a complete property plan.
BUDGET: all projects require some money. So a reasonable decision on how much to spend will have to be decided. That amount that should be based on several factors, some only you can decide but the Designer can help with determining what can be accomplished with you budget and whether the project and expenditure will produce a reasonable expectation for return.
DESIRES: these are the nice things. How you want to use the landscape, what requirements are needed, plants that you would like to include in the plan and most importantly what plants NOT to include. Paving, do you like brick, natural stone or maybe even some decorative gravels. Would a deck be needed. How about shade or screening from undesirable views or windy conditions.
DOCUMENT: write all this done so that they can be used by the designer to come up with a plan and it can be to go over the design to make sure that your desires and requirements have be taken into account.

New house tip: When building an new home most people leave the landscape planning until the after the house is built. This is a mistake. The old adage 'Measure Twice Cut Once' is true in landscaping also. If you think about how the property will be landscaped as the house is designed and sited this will increase your chances of getting the most desirable landscape without having to re-do or make-do with a plan that is an after thought. I have seen houses that have a major obstruction in the way of their front walk or patio that has to be built smaller than desired because of something in the way or grade levels that don't work. Include a landscape design with the design of the house.
This is a short list but a good starting point. When you decide to proceed the designer and yourself will have more questions and decisions but with any successful project good planning is paramount.
